Sino-Canada School

The Student Experience

All students at Sino-Canada School live on campus in student dormitories.

Since there is such a range of ages (6 - 18 years old), a great number of student experience pieces could be written, but this one will focus on the Student Experience of the average high school student.

For most students, the day starts at 6:20 am with the shrilling sound of a whistle to wake them from their slumber.   Some early birds are up prior to the alarm to get to basketball practice, fit club, work out, or get a jump on the breakfast rush.

Students have the choice of a sit-down meal at the lakeside restaurants, or they may choose to grab something on the go at breakfast kiosks inside the school building. The warning bell chimes at 7:40 am, with the expectation that students are in their seats ready to learn when the final bell goes at 7:45 am.

Class goes until 12:15 pm when there is a one hour and ten minute common lunch for all students.  The ringing of the lunchtime bell initiates a mass migration, as most students head to the lakeside to eat.

Choosing which restaurant to go to is one of the most challenging choices I have to make every day.

Afternoon classes begin at 1:25 pm.  For most students, this is the last BC block of the day. Some students, however, choose to take an elective course that runs from 3:00 pm to 4:25 pm (block E). Students exclusively enrolled in the BC program and not taking a block E class are encouraged to spend their spare time studying.  The BC library is a popular choice for students who want a quiet area to work individually or a comfortable space to work in small groups. Those who wish to take advantage of free bilingual tutoring may enroll in the Bilingual Support program for small group tutoring and assistance with their homework.  Many students in the BC program are also enrolled in the Chinese program. For those students, the end of BC class time at 2:50 pm means the beginning of Chinese class time.

I'm in the habit of going to the library to finish up my homework.

All students are given a break from 4:40 pm to 6:20 pm to participate in clubs and eat their dinner. Club time is from 4:40 pm to 5:40 pm, Monday through Thursday. On any given day there are nearly a dozen clubs for students to choose from.

After school I go to club or team training.  I love sports.

Sino-Canada has designated club time Monday to Thursday from 4:30 to 5:30pm. On any given day, students have the opportunity to partake in a range of academic, athletic, or artistic clubs.

Students are encouraged to participate in as many clubs as possible to broaden their horizons, meet new people, and find their passions.

Student participation in clubs not only helps them become well-rounded individuals but also teaches time management.

The breadth of clubs at Sino-Canada ensures that there is something for everyone.

Since we are a boarding school and the students are here from Monday-Friday our club activities have evolved over the years into more than just ‘club time’ activities.

Many of our athletic clubs are members of the BCOS (BC Offshore School) League and also the SYAC (Suzhou Youth Athletics Conference), which gives our teams the opportunity to compete against other schools.

Our Model United Nations club, in addition to hosting meetings and competitions, travels to Qingdao every year to compete internationally.

Students in the Outdoor Club are taken rock-climbing, camping, snowboarding/skiing, and ice skating.

Our musicians are showcased twice a year at our Acoustic Café, and the talent of our actors is enjoyed through many performing events, but especially every June for our school musical.

I have to balance my extra curricular activities and my studying.  I usually work until 11:30 pm, and then go to bed.
